(We interviewed a pharmacist in Illinois)
Pharmacy Tech Pros: In what type of setting do you work?
Pharmacist: "Currently hospital setting but previously, home infusion and industry experience"
Pharmacy Tech Pros: When hiring a pharm tech, what are the most important qualities you look for?
Pharmacist:
"Experience/training… Most hospitals recruit applicants with some
medical experience, then internally train them based on needs and
internal candidates. Entry level techsare trained for delivery and
pyxis/cart fill, next IV Room, then order entry, then chemo compounding.
Home infusion techs: We would hire techs with at least 5 yrs
hospital/IV experience."
Pharmacy Tech Pros: What are some resume-writing tips you can offer to ensure that a job applicant gets an interview?
Pharmacist: "Don’t submit a handwritten resume. Mention all the skills
you’ve acquired, especially computer usage, such as “Microsoft office”
utilization, pyxis familiarity, IV/chemo experience, IV delivery systems
utilized (home pumps, CADD cassettes, etc.)"
Pharmacy Tech Pros: What are some interviewing tips that you can offer to someone who’s applying to be a pharm tech?
Pharmacist:
"Relax--most pharmacists don’t bite. Mention that you're used to
working with a team and that you play well with others."
Pharmacy Tech Pros: What is a pharm tech’s best path to find the highest paying job?
Pharmacist:
"Get as much experience/training as possible, this will make you
eligible for internal opportunities and don’t be timid about seeking
positions outside the retail/hospital setting. Home infusion techs are
usually well paid, mainly because the facility may only have 1-2 techs
and don’t have the time to coddle/train inexperienced techs."
