Pharmacy Technician Test:
Important Information to Prepare for the Test

The pharmacy technician test is the exam that will unlock your future to a successful career in the pharmacy field. The official certification exam to obtain the CPhT designation is issued by the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB). The content and scoring for the PTCE was updated as of November 1, 2013.

It is a computerized exam that is administered through Pearson Vue testing services. The exam is given year-round on a continuous basis. You can check this site to find a testing location near you.

A Word of Caution:
Is the Fastest Route the Best Route?

Although it is advised that you complete an accredited training program before taking the certification exam, a training/educational program is not required in many states.

However, you will increase your chances of success on not only the test itself but also in your career if you do complete an accredited program of study BEFORE taking the exam.

Basic Info About the Test

A high school diploma (or its equivalent) is the only required education for the exam.

Other requirements for the test are no felony conviction(s), and no drug or pharmacy-related convictions.

The official pharmacy technician test (PTCE) contains a total of 90 questions.

You are given 1 hour and 50 minutes to complete the exam.

The test is based on nine "knowledge domains" listed on the PTCE blueprint (effective as of November 1, 2013):

  1. Pharmacology for Technicians (13.75%)
  2. Pharmacy Law and Regulations (12.50%)
  3. Sterile and Non-sterile Compounding (8.75%)
  4. Medication Safety (12.50%)
  5. Pharmacy Quality Assurance (7.50%)
  6. Medication Order Entry and Fill Process (17.50%)
  7. Pharmacy Inventory Management (8.75%)
  8. Pharmacy Billing and Reimbursement (8.75%)
  9. Pharmacy Information Systems Usage and Application (10%)

The highest score that can be obtained is 1600. A score of 1400 (or roughly 87%) is the minimum score required for passing the test. (This minimum percentage is nearly 15% higher than with the previous version of the exam prior to November 1, 2013.)

Here's an example question. Note that we include detailed feedback with each question, so it's like a study guide and practice exam in one!

Here is a sample question, along with the detailed explanation you will get with every question...It's like a practice exam and study guide in one:

1. An IV is to be infused at 150 mL/hr. If the tubing delivers 30 gtt/mL, what is the infusion rate in gtt/min?

50 gtt/min
75 gtt/min
150 gtt/min
300 gtt/min

Answer explanation: To solve for the infusion rate, use dimensional analysis for multiple conversions. An extra ratio will be required, which is the conversion factor from hours to minutes. The ratios should be arranged for the units to cancel, leaving the units required. Using the following arrangement, the milliliters and hours will cancel, leaving gtt/min: 150 mL/1 hr * 1 hr/60 min * 30 gtt/1 mL = 75 gtt/min.

Now you can join the ranks of those they’ve helped to pass the pharmacy technician test, too!
