West Virginia requires pharmacy technicians to register with the West Virginia Board of Pharmacy. Most new applicants must also hold national certification from PTCB or NHA. This guide covers training, exams, fees, renewal and the other rules technicians need to know, based on the Board’s website and the technician rule (15 CSR 7) that took effect July 1, 2026. Rules change from time to time, so check back occasionally and confirm details with the Board.

Does West Virginia regulate pharmacy technicians?

Yes. The West Virginia Board of Pharmacy registers pharmacy technicians and pharmacy technician trainees. The Board’s technician rule, 15 CSR 7 (“Board of Pharmacy Rules for Registration of Pharmacy Technicians”), was most recently updated with an effective date of July 1, 2026. It sets out who may register, how technicians are trained, what they may and may not do, and how registrations are renewed. Technicians work under the direct or electronic supervision of a licensed pharmacist; trainees work under a pharmacist’s direct supervision.

Is certification required to practice in West Virginia?

Yes, for almost everyone registering today. Since July 1, 2014, anyone seeking registration as a pharmacy technician must pass either the PTCB exam (PTCE) or the NHA exam (ExCPT) and hold a current national certification as a Certified Pharmacy Technician (CPhT). You must also keep that certification current, because it is required at renewal.

Technicians who were registered in West Virginia before July 1, 2014, and have kept their registration active, are not required to hold national certification to renew. They must complete continuing education instead.

What certification exam(s) is/are approved by the state?

The Board recognizes two national exams:

  • The Pharmacy Technician Certification Exam (PTCE), administered by the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB).
  • The ExCPT exam, administered by the National Healthcareer Association (NHA).

Both lead to the CPhT credential. PTCB lists the application fee for its CPhT exam as $129 and requires completion of a PTCB-recognized training program or at least 500 hours of equivalent work experience to sit for the exam. NHA sets its own eligibility rules, so check with NHA before applying.

When is registration required?

Before you perform any pharmacy technician duties. If you are still training, you must hold a pharmacy technician trainee registration before you start working in a pharmacy. Trainees may work only as students in a Board-approved education program or as employees in a pharmacy’s Board-approved 500-hour on-the-job training program.

A trainee must pass the PTCE or ExCPT, obtain CPhT certification and apply for full technician registration before the trainee permit expires. A trainee who misses that deadline must stop working in the pharmacy until the requirement is met, unless the Board grants an extension on petition.

Is licensure required?

West Virginia uses registration, not licensure, for pharmacy technicians, though Board web pages sometimes use the word “license.” You must be registered with the Board, as a technician or as a trainee, before performing technician duties.

One exception applies. A cashier who handles a prescription drug only at the point of sale, to hand it to the patient and take payment, does not need to register. That is true even if the cashier can look up patient details in the pharmacy’s computer system. A pharmacy may still require a criminal background check before hiring.

What do I have to do to become registered?

  • Hold a high school diploma or GED.
  • Complete a Board-approved training program: either graduate from an approved school or training center, or complete a pharmacy’s 500-hour on-the-job program. Out-of-state technicians with national certification and at least one year of practice can qualify another way.
  • Pass the PTCE or ExCPT and hold current CPhT certification.
  • Complete a state and national fingerprint-based criminal history check through IdentoGo (service code 228Q8H) within the 12 months before you apply. You pay the fingerprinting costs; the Board does not list the amount.
  • Apply online with a 3×4 head-and-shoulders photograph and the required certifications and affidavit.
  • Pay the $25 registration fee plus a $10 Pharmacist Recovery Network assessment ($35 total), unless you qualify for a fee waiver.

Technicians registered in another state may also apply under West Virginia’s Universal Professional and Occupational Licensing Act if they have moved to West Virginia or are military spouses stationed there.

Is training required?

Yes. You must complete a Board-approved competency-based training program. There are two routes. You can graduate from an approved program at a school or training center, or you can train on the job at a pharmacy whose training program the Board has approved. The on-the-job program requires at least 500 hours of work under a pharmacist’s direct supervision within 18 months.

Training must cover topics such as Board rules, safety and security, drug names and dosage forms, reading prescriptions, preparing prescriptions and non-sterile compounding.

The Board’s online application page, last updated in 2025, still asks some applicants for a pharmacist-in-charge certification of a 20-hour training program. That requirement came from the earlier version of the rule and is not in the July 2026 rule, so check with the Board before applying.

Are there Continuing Education (CE) requirements?

It depends on when you were first registered. If you registered on or after July 1, 2014, you renew by submitting a current copy of your PTCB or NHA certification. The Board does not set separate CE hours for you, but you must meet your certifying body’s CE rules to keep your certification current.

If you registered before July 1, 2014, or under the Universal Professional and Occupational Licensing Act, you must complete at least 20 CPE hours every two years. At least 1 hour must cover pharmacy law and 1 hour must cover patient safety. Extra hours cannot be carried into the next reporting period, which runs from July 1 to June 30 two years later.

How often is renewal required?

Every two years. By rule, technician registrations expire on June 30, with half renewing in even-numbered years and half in odd-numbered years, so check the expiration date on your own registration.

The Board’s renewal page lists a renewal payment of $30, made up of the $20 biennial renewal fee plus a $10 Pharmacist Recovery Network assessment. Applications received after June 30 owe a $20 late fee, for a total of $50. If you have not applied by August 31, your name is removed from the register and you must apply for reinstatement. Reinstatement costs $80: a $50 reinstatement fee, the $20 renewal fee and the $10 assessment. Technicians whose registration has lapsed for more than a year must also provide a copy of their national certificate.

What should I do if I change jobs or change my home address?

The Board requires you to report any change of name or address within 30 days, using the online change of name/address form on wvbop.com. You will need your last name, license (registration) number and the last four digits of your Social Security number.

For job changes, the Board provides an online Employment Update form. The Board’s public pages do not state a deadline for technicians to report a new employer, so update your record promptly. Trainees have extra rules. When a trainee leaves an on-the-job program, the old and new pharmacists-in-charge must each notify the Board in writing within 30 days. A trainee registration transfers to a new pharmacy only in limited cases.

Other important West Virginia pharmacy tech requirements

  • Ratio: a pharmacy may have no more than six pharmacy technicians and trainees combined per on-duty pharmacist. Pharmacy interns do not count toward the limit, and the pharmacist-in-charge has final say on the ratio.
  • Name tags: technicians must wear a name tag reading “Pharmacy Technician,” and trainees one reading “Pharmacy Technician Trainee.” Only pharmacists and pharmacy interns may wear a white coat.
  • Technicians and trainees may not take verbal prescriptions, interpret prescriptions, select drug products, perform drug regimen reviews, transfer prescriptions, or counsel patients.
  • Under a pharmacist’s direct supervision, technicians may perform product verification, gather medication lists for reconciliation, supervise other technicians and give immunizations as allowed by 15 CSR 12.
  • A nuclear pharmacy technician endorsement is available with added training.
