Wyoming requires pharmacy technicians to hold a license from the Wyoming State Board of Pharmacy, and a full license requires national certification from PTCB or NHA. If you are not certified yet, you can start as a pharmacy technician-in-training under a two-year permit at a sponsoring pharmacy.

Does Wyoming regulate pharmacy technicians?
Yes. The Wyoming Pharmacy Technician Act (W.S. 33-24-301) requires a pharmacy technician to register with the Wyoming State Board of Pharmacy, pay a fee and be licensed before performing any pharmacy functions, and to work only under the supervision of a licensed pharmacist. The Board’s technician rules are in Chapter 10 of the Wyoming Pharmacy Act Rules and Regulations.
Wyoming has two technician credentials: the pharmacy technician license and the pharmacy technician-in-training permit, which lets you train on the job at one sponsoring pharmacy while you work toward national certification. The Board also includes one pharmacy technician among its nine voting members.
Is certification required to practice in Wyoming?
Yes, for a full license. Every pharmacy technician license applicant must be currently certified by the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) or the National Healthcareer Association (NHA, ExCPT exam), and you must send a copy of your current certificate with your application.
If you are not certified yet, you can start as a pharmacy technician-in-training. The permit does not require certification. It is valid for two years from the date it is issued, and the Board’s application says it is not renewable. If you are not licensed as a certified pharmacy technician within those two years, you must stop training and may no longer perform pharmacy functions.
What certification exam(s) is/are approved by the state?
The Board recognizes two national certifications:
- PTCB’s Certified Pharmacy Technician (CPhT) credential, earned by passing the Pharmacy Technician Certification Exam (PTCE). PTCB currently lists the application and exam fee as $129, with eligibility through a PTCB-recognized education or training program or at least 500 hours of work experience as a pharmacy technician.
- NHA’s Certified Pharmacy Technician credential, earned by passing the ExCPT exam. Check NHA directly for its current eligibility rules and fees.
Your certification must be current when you apply, and you must keep it current if you ever need to reinstate an expired Wyoming license.
When is registration required?
Before you perform any pharmacy functions. State law requires a technician to register and be licensed by the Board first. A technician-in-training must apply for and pay for a training permit before starting on-the-job training. Wyoming law treats employing an unlicensed pharmacy technician as unprofessional conduct, and a pharmacy may be disciplined for letting anyone the Board has not licensed work as a technician or technician-in-training.
Is licensure required?
Yes. You need either a pharmacy technician license or a technician-in-training permit before you work. A trainee’s permit is valid only at the sponsoring pharmacy named on it. If you move to another pharmacy, you must submit a Pharmacy Sponsor Transfer Form right away, and the Board reissues the permit at no charge.
A pharmacy technician license or registration from another state does not transfer to Wyoming. Out-of-state technicians must apply to the Board as new applicants.
What do I have to do to become licensed?
- Be at least 18 years old and hold a high school diploma or equivalent.
- Hold current PTCB or NHA (ExCPT) certification.
- Have no history of drug abuse (or show satisfactory evidence of rehabilitation) and pass a fingerprint background check through the Wyoming Division of Criminal Investigation.
- Get the application packet from the Board’s technician page, by emailing [email protected] or at the Cheyenne office.
- Have the application signed in front of a notary.
- Mail everything in one envelope: the application, a signed passport-size photo, your birth certificate, a diploma, transcript or GED, your certificate and two FD-258 fingerprint cards.
- Pay $100 ($50 application fee plus $50 background check) by check or money order. Cash is not accepted, and faxed or emailed applications are refused.
The Board may interview you before issuing a license.
Is training required?
Wyoming does not require a specific training program, but you need national certification for a full license, and PTCB and NHA each have their own education or experience requirements. The technician-in-training permit is the Board’s route to on-the-job training.
To apply for a trainee permit, send the application with a copy of your diploma, transcript or GED, two fingerprint cards, a signed waiver and $65 ($15 permit fee plus $50 background check). The sponsoring pharmacist-in-charge must sign it and takes responsibility for your training. Trainees work under a pharmacist’s direct supervision and may do tasks such as counting, labeling, computer entry and refill requests.
Are there Continuing Education (CE) requirements?
Yes. Registered pharmacy technicians must complete and report 10 hours of approved continuing pharmacy education earned during the previous license period to renew. Key points from Board Rules Chapter 6:
- CE must come from ACPE-approved programs and be reported to NABP’s CPE Monitor.
- You are exempt from CE for your first license renewal period.
- If you mark on your renewal that you give immunizations, at least 1 of the 10 hours must be about immunizations.
- Extra hours do not carry over to the next year.
- The Board may audit you, and failing an audit can lead to discipline.
- A technician who is short on CE may be issued an inactive license and cannot practice on it. To reactivate, you make up the CE for each inactive year, up to five years.
How often is renewal required?
Every year. Technician licenses must be renewed on or before December 31, and the renewal fee is $50 (Board Rules Chapter 21, effective May 24, 2023). Renewals postmarked, submitted online or hand-delivered after December 31 are charged a $35 late fee on top of the renewal fee. The Board’s website links to an online licensee portal for renewals.
If you do not renew by December 31, your license expires 10 days after the Board mails you a renewal notice by certified mail, and it can be restored until March 31. After that you must petition for reinstatement with a letter, back annual and late fees for up to five years, proof of current PTCB or ExCPT certification and CE for the expired years (up to five). The Board’s reinstatement packet also asks for new fingerprint cards and a $50 background check fee. You may not practice on an expired license.
What should I do if I change jobs or change my home address?
Board Rules Chapter 10 require a pharmacy technician to notify the Board within 30 days of any change of employment or mailing address. The Board posts a Change of Address/Employment Form and a separate Legal Name Change Form on its pharmacy technician page.
Technicians-in-training have an extra step, because the permit is tied to the sponsoring pharmacy. Chapter 10 says you must submit a Pharmacy Sponsor Transfer Form immediately when your sponsoring pharmacy changes, because the permit is valid only at the pharmacy named on it. The trainee application also says to update it, signed by the new sponsoring pharmacy, within 30 days of changing employers or home address. The Board reissues the permit at no charge.
Other important Wyoming pharmacy tech requirements
- Wear a name badge that says “Pharmacy Technician” or “Pharmacy Technician-in-Training” whenever you are in or near the pharmacy, and identify your level on every work phone call.
- No technician may take new verbal prescription orders, interpret prescriptions, get clinical clarifications, review clinical data, consult with prescribers or patients, or counsel.
- Licensed technicians may help with compounding once the pharmacist-in-charge certifies their competency, rechecked every year. They may also transfer prescriptions electronically or by fax with the pharmacist’s consent.
- If no supervising pharmacist is in the building, a retail pharmacy must close and staff must leave the pharmacy.
- Technicians who give immunizations must register with the Board, complete an ACPE-accredited technician immunization training program, hold current CPR certification and work under a qualified pharmacist’s supervision.
- Wyoming has no set pharmacist-to-technician ratio. The Board removed it from Chapter 10 in its 2020 rule revision, and the pharmacist-in-charge must keep enough staff to work safely.
