  No. Each pharmacy will train its own technicians and maintain proper records.

Are there Continuing Education (CE) requirements? No, however, to maintain your certification, you must satisfy the CE requirements.

How often is renewal required? Pharmacy technician licenses expire on the last day of the birth month of the registrant, every 2 years. Renewal applications are sent approximately two months before the expiration of the current registration. The renewal fee is $55.

What should I do if I change jobs or change my home address? Report the change to the Board within 10 days.

  • The pharmacy technician’s certificate of registration must be displayed and visible to the public in the pharmacy where the technician is employed.
  • The technician must wear a nametag identifying him- or herself as a pharmacy technician at all times while working in the pharmacy.
  • The supervising pharmacist is responsible for all actions of the pharmacy technician.
  • Uncertified pharmacy technicians registered with the Board before January 1, 2010, who worked as technicians a minimum of 2,000 hours during the 18-month period prior to registration renewal, and who continue to work as pharmacy technicians a minimum of 2,000 hours during any period up to December 31, 2013, may qualify for an extension of the deadline for national certification. The pharmacists in charge of the technicians must certify by affidavits to the technicians’ length of employment and hours of employment as pharmacy technicians. The affidavit must be submitted with the technicians’ applications for registration renewal. The registration certificates will identify the technicians as "uncertified pharmacy technicians"; however, they must attain national certification by December 31, 2013.
